How Often Should You Replace Your Windshield Wipers?

How often should you replace your windshield wipers? The simple answer to that is every six to 12 months, but that's still way too general. Six months may not seem like a long time, but depending on where you live, your car might have experienced heavy snowfall, thunderstorms, or even small sandstorms during that time. All of these things will affect the life of your windshield wipers, so it's best to look for signs that will tell you when you need to buy replacement wipers.

Worn Rubber Blades

First of all, you should be checking the rubber blades on your wipers once a month. These act as squeegees that wipe away water, snow, and debris on your windshield. When they work correctly, they barely leave a trace of the offending material. Unfortunately, they also wear down fairly easily. If you notice cracks, gouges, or any rough spots on your windshield wiper blades, your wipers will need to be replaced.

Horrible Squeaking Sounds

If you're driving your car and your windshield wipers make a horrible squeaking or screeching sound when they're turned on, the rubber is most likely wearing down. You might still get some use out of your windshield wipers if you can put up with the noise, but not for long.

A Streaky Windshield

Your windshield wipers shouldn't leave any streaks when they're working correctly. If they are, consider buying replacements, especially if you've noticed the last two signs.

Rusty Metal

Finally, check the metal parts of your windshield wipers whenever you check the rubber blades. Rust and corrosion on these parts won't impede your vision when you drive, but the wipers themselves could break. It's best just to buy new windshield wipers before things get to that point.
