Cadillac Engine Not Working

Why Is My Car Not Starting?

Like most people, you probably depend on your car taking you to and from the places you need to go. But when something happens to your vehicle that prevents it from starting, your plans can quickly fall through. Aside from putting a damper on your day, a car that won't start may have more severe problems that a mechanic will have to fix.

Faulty Ignition

The ignition is a switch that gets your car's engine to start on demand. Sometimes, problems with the ignition can mimic symptoms of a dead battery. An excellent way to distinguish between the two is to test the strength left in your car's battery. If the battery still has power, the ignition might be the culprit. Bringing your vehicle to a mechanic is recommended for expert repairs and a formal diagnosis.

Dead Battery

A dead battery is a top reason why your car suddenly stops working. If your car has a dead battery, you might notice some warning signs before the battery quits altogether. Symptoms of an ailing battery include a car that's slow to start, dim headlights, and faded interior lighting. The battery should be checked by a mechanic about every four to five years or 60,000 miles. You can also check the battery's strength at home to see if it has lost power. If so, it will need to be replaced by a mechanic.

Clogged Fuel Filter

The engine under your car's hood has a fuel filter that keeps clean air and fluid circulating through the engine and the fuel lines. If the fuel filter gets clogged or contaminated, it won't allow sufficient amounts of air or clean air to reach the engine. The engine will suffer from reduced performance as a result. Eventually, a clogged filter can prevent the car from starting altogether.

Bad Motor Starter

The motor starter is an electric motor that signals the engine to run. The starter connects the wires between the battery and engine on your car. The starter can wear out like any other motor in your vehicle. A sign that the starter is bad is that nothing happens when you turn the key in the ignition. You may also hear clicking sounds.

No Gas In The Tank

A car that runs out of gas won't start when you want it to. If the tank hits empty, you'll need to call roadside assistance or have the car towed to a gas station. You should also make sure that the fuel gauge is not broken.
