Let's be honest: When shopping for a luxury vehicle, fuel efficiency is not that high on the requirements list, if there at all. And that's because most premium vehicles are propelled by large, mighty engines that demand lots of fuel to get going. Automobiles from Cadillac, which is one of the luxury divisions under the General Motors umbrella, are no exception. However, if you're purchasing a Cadillac car and fuel efficiency is of utmost importance, you can whittle down the available vehicles to those that will stretch your gas station dollar the longest. In fact, some of them are just as good, if not better, with fuel than cars with less demanding powertrains. In ascending order, here are the three most fuel-efficient Cadillac cars currently available:
3. XT5
Crossovers rose in popularity partly because of their ability to provide great gas mileage-even with a larger, SUV body style. The XT5, which is Cadillac's lone crossover offering, is no exception. One of the marquee's newest vehicles, it is now in its second year with the 2018 model. And for the second year in a row, the XT5 is relying on a powertrain configuration that consists of a 3.6-liter V6, an 8-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive-which does its part by directing engine power to two wheels, instead of needing more to send to all wheels-to peak at 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. For a midsize luxury crossover, those are pretty good numbers.
2. ATS
Even more fuel-efficient is the Cadillac ATS, which is a much smaller vehicle: a compact car available as a four-door sedan and a two-door coupe. To maximize gas mileage, you will need to go with the smaller of the two available workhorses: the LTG, which is a small, 2.0-liter turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine. Joined with an 8-speed automatic transmission and accompanied by a rear-wheel drivetrain, the LTG helps the ATS achieve a peak fuel economy of 22 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.
1. CT6 PHEV
Not surprisingly, the most fuel-efficient Cadillac vehicle does not solely rely on gasoline. As indicated by its name, this vehicle is actually the plug-in hybrid version of Cadillac's full-size sedan, the CT6. Released with its gasoline counterpart in 2016, the CT6 plug-in hybrid uses a powertrain that combines the same LTG engine available on the ATS with two electric motors and a liquid-cooled 18.4-kilowatt lithium-ion battery pack. In hybrid mode, the CT6 PHEV provides a fuel economy of 23 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. However, when running on full electric power, the car produces a combined EPA rating of 62 equivalent mpg.
