Cadillac Super Cruise Self-Driving System to Arrive This Year
2017 promises many great things for Cadillac, from the release of the new CT6 Hybrid to the automaker’s magnificent return to prototype endurance racing. There are also speculations that the new year will also bring the long-awaited debut of Super Cruise.
Several years ago, the automaker announced that it was working on developing a system that would allow new Cadillac cars and SUVs to drive themselves in certain situations. According to the automaker, the system has since been undergoing “rigorous testing and technology refinement” in order to perfect the technology. Now, the first run of this technology is rumored to finally be coming to fruition starting on the 2017 Cadillac CT6.
“Super Cruise is designed to give the driver the ability of hands-free driving when the system determines it is safe to do so,” said John Capp, GM director of Global Active Safety Electronics and Innovation back in 2013.
Super Cruise will operate when traveling on the highway or during heavy traffic situations. Well-equipped to handle the demands of high-speed driving, the system can accelerate, brake and steer. In order to map the road ahead, Super Cruise relies on a combination of cameras, sensors and radar, as well as easy-to-navigate road conditions.
Although the system boasts quite advanced capabilities, it will still require the driver to pay close attention at every moment. Using sophisticated facial recognition and other advanced technology, the vehicle will be able to determine whether or not the driver is alert and focused. If it suspects the driver is distracted or falling asleep, it will use a variety of alerts to reengage them, including an audible sound, flashing gauge cluster lights and seat vibrations. If the driver does not respond, the vehicle will turn on the hazard lights and safely pull itself over.
While the automaker has not confirmed an exact release date for Super Cruise, we have high hopes to see this incredible technology soon. Stay posted to our Cadillac blog for the latest information on this exciting update.
